Palm Beach County Asks the Governor for an Emergency Declaration After the Learjet Crash, With No Return Date Yet for Hundreds Evacuated
County Administrator Joe Abruzzo wants a state-of-emergency order to unlock funds for displaced residents and nearby businesses, Commissioner Joel Flores wants temporary housing explored - and officials still cannot say when the mobile home park next to the crash site reopens.

Palm Beach County took its Learjet crash response to the governor on Monday afternoon. County Administrator Joe Abruzzo said he has asked Gov. Ron DeSantis to approve an executive order declaring a state of emergency, the Palm Beach Post reported in its live file - a step that would make the county eligible for funds to help support the residents displaced by Sunday's crash and the businesses near the Greenacres site. The crash, which killed all nine people aboard the Austin-to-Bahamas jet, displaced an estimated 600 people from the mobile homes near Military Trail and Cresthaven Boulevard.
For those families, Monday brought no date to circle. County officials said they do not know when the hundreds of people evacuated from the mobile home park next to the crash site can return home. Abruzzo said there are no safety concerns regarding the area, but the park remains closed off so federal investigators can continue collecting debris and evidence from a field that the NTSB measured on Monday at roughly half a mile by four-tenths of a mile - a closure measured in evidence bags, not in hazards.
With no return date in sight, Commissioner Joel Flores said he has asked county administrators to explore temporary housing for the displaced families - the county's first move from emergency shelter toward something longer for people whose homes sit inside a federal investigation. Officials also provided no timeline on Monday for releasing the identities of the nine who died, many of whom have already been identified by grieving relatives; this desk continues to publish no victim name until officials release identifications.
