Panthers Fall 5-3 to the Red Wings in Sunrise: Two Detroit Goals 45 Seconds Apart in the Third Decide It (West Palm Beach Watch News)

The Florida Panthers never led on Monday night, and two goals 45 seconds apart early in the third period cost them the game. The Detroit Red Wings defeated the Panthers 5-3 in Sunrise, Reuters reported, ending Florida's three-game win streak in the second game of its homestand. Justin Faulk scored the go-ahead goal on a power play with 17:52 left in the third and added an assist, and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard converted a pass from Lucas Raymond in the slot just 45 seconds later to break what had been an alternating-goals game.

Detroit opened the scoring at 5:26 of the first, when Carter Mazur - scoring his first NHL goal in his 18th career game - beat Jacob Markstrom from the left circle. Sam Reinhart tied it in the first, finishing a feed from Carter Verhaeghe after a Detroit turnover. Alex DeBrincat put Detroit back ahead 1:26 into the second on a 3-on-1 break, and Aaron Ekblad tied it again with a short-handed rebound goal late in the second. Markstrom, playing for the first time since Oct. 17 after an upper-body injury sustained in practice, made 24 saves.

Florida made one last push: with Markstrom pulled for an extra attacker, Sam Bennett scored with 3:20 left to cut it to 4-3, but the Panthers could not find the equalizer, and Emmitt Finnie added an empty-net goal with three seconds left. In the Detroit net, former Panther Daniil Tarasov made 23 saves to beat his former team.
